More specifically you will learn:

Why finding a trustworthy mentor is crucial for becoming successful in academia.

How to approach potential mentors.

Why saying “NO” is necessary to get things done.

About Prof. Craig Carter

Professor W. Craig Carter is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and MacVicar Faculty Fellow, he was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, 1983 with a degree in Bachelor of Science, took up his MS at the University of California, Berkeley, 1987 and his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, 1989.

His research centers on theory and meso-scale modelling of materials properties and processing. In particular, Professor Carter has focused on thermodynamics and kinetics of interfaces, simulations of microstructural evolution, and predictions of fracture and reliability in materials. Recently, his work has turned towards the science of battery materials and has recently co-founded a company, 24M, with Prof. Yet-Ming Chiang which will produce grid scale energy storage solutions. I have just started a new research program on economic models of battery usage on the electric grid. He is also very interested in pedagogy—-especially on how to combine research and new knowledge with foundational learning.. Professor Carter has received NSF funding to develop new teaching methods for science and engineering. He has received MIT’s highest honors for teaching: The MacVicar fellowship which recognizes excellence in teaching for the institute and the Bose award or teaching excellence in the School of Engineering. Prof Carter has served in the following positions: National Research Council Post-doc, NIST (1989-1991), Staff Scientist, Rockwell International Science Center, (1991-92), Research Scientist, NIST (1992-98), Assoc. Prof. MIT (1998-2003), Cofounder, 24M technologies (2010-), Full Professor MIT (2003-)

Professor Carter is the recipient of the following Honors and Awards:

MacVicar Distinguished Teaching Fellow (2008), Bose Award for excellence in engineering education (2008),

R.M. Fulrath award, Am. Ceram. Soc. (2006), Fellow, Am. Ceram. Soc. (1999), Technology of the Year (1999),

Civil Service Bronze medal (1997), Robert L. Coble award for young scientists (1996), Ross Coffin Purdy

award for best paper (1990)

Professor Craig Carter and 3.016 are the triumphant winners of APO’s Big Screw competition. The competition awards a two-foot long left-handed aluminum screw to the faculty member or staff person “most deserving of such an award”; the winner is determined by the amount of money contributed in his or her name and all proceeds are donated to the winner’s chosen charity. Professor Carter has designated Camp Kesem, a camp for children whose parents have or have had cancer.
According to the Big Screw website, this is the first time a Course 3 faculty member has won the competition and congratulates Prof. Carter on this honour for which he has worked so hard.

More specifically you will learn:

How to raise the perceived value of your product

How to launch your product and membership site

How to utilize psychological triggers to your advantage

Yaro Starak is an Australian internet marketer, blogger and owner of the website Entrepreneurs-Journey.com, a blog about entrepreneurship, internet marketing, selling information online Yaro has been creating, buying and selling internet assets since 1998. He teaches people how to make a full-time income from blogging part time through his Blog Mastermind coaching program and how to launch online membership sites through his Membership Site Mastermind course.Yaro began a Business Management degree in 1998 at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, from which he graduated in 2001. In his 3rd year at university Yaro created BetterEdit, an online proofreading and editing service. The business continued to be successful over a number of years and at the end of 2004, on recommendation of a close friend, Ed Chalmers, Yaro installed a blog for the site, to help with search engine optimization. After a short while Yaro realised that he was more interested in blogging about internet business than writing essays and academic education, which gave him the idea to create the Entrepreneurs-Journey blog. Yaro started his Entrepreneurs-Journey blog in early 2005 and says it was a pivotal point for him because at the time he was barely making enough money to live independently. His blog, which makes over $20,000 a month and has over 100,000 subscribers, is a chronicle of his journey to transform his life and increase his income. Since starting the blog, Yaro has created and released a number of successful membership sites including Blog Mastermind, Become A Blogger (with Gideon Shalwick) and Membership Site Mastermind.

This is the story about Dr. Pablo Pomposiello Miravent who temporarily felt like that his identity was taken from him. The reason: Pablo did not receive tenure (life time contract as a professor) although he had been working towards that goal for 15 consecutive years. Pablo eventually recovered and came back strong. He was recruited as a Chief Scientific Officer for a biotech start up and later founded his own biotech company Bacmine. This interview is about Pablo’s metamorphosis from scientist to entrepreneur.

More specifically you will learn:

What job opportunities are open to scientists within and beyond academia

What it means to be a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of a start up

How Pablo funded and launched his own bio teach startup Bacmine

What Pablo would do differently today

His main field of expertise is the genetic responses to oxidative stress in enteric bacteria. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Ph.D. in Biology in 1997, and was a Research Fellow at Harvard University between 1997 and 2001. Pablo became a Professor at the Microbiology Department at the University of Massachusetts in 2001 and worked in Amherst until 2009, when he moved to Spain. In Madrid, he worked as Chief Scientific Officer at Microbionta SL. In 2011, together with scientists at the Centro Nacional de Biotecnologia (CNB-CSIC), founded Bacmine SL, a biotech company that produces novel tools for synthetic biology. Pablo lives in Madrid.

I am offering personal coaching sessions via Skype in following areas:

Building a sustainable and LOW maintenance business on the side: I know what you think: “How on earth shall I build and run a business in addition to my already challenging and time consuming academic career? – There is no way!”. The answer is simple: build a system that allows you to own the business but not necessarily run it.

Personal Branding for Academics: People yearn for connections with real people, not abstract products or organizations. Serve them by being you.

YouTube Marketing for Academics: YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world. Learn how to use it to your advantage.

Outsourcing Management for Academics: Learn to clone yourself, so you can focus on the important stuff: Research and Publications.

FAST Qualitative Research via Skype for Academics: No money and no time? Use skype to conduct qualitative research from anywhere in the world with anyone in the world. Do you also want to learn how to record and transcribe your interviews in autopilot mode? I can help with that too.

E-Learning for Academics: Are you still believing in the dominance of offline teaching? Well, whether you like it or not, the future of online teaching and learning is happening right now. Find out how you can utilize e-learning to the fullest.

Public Speaking for Academics: Have you ever wondered why most TED talks are so engaging and educational at the same time? Well, I have watched and analyzed hundreds of TED talks and can teach how to conceptualize, plan and execute a TED worthy presentation.

BUDGET Conference Flying for Academics: Learn how to hack ALL existing flying bonus programs. This knowledge will allow you to fly to conferences all around the world with a low budget. If you need a break from academic life, you can apply the very same techniques to travel the world cheaply.

About Stephan Si-Hwan PARK

Stephan is a trained marketing manager who worked in ad agencies in New York and Munich. The biggest client he worked for was Volvo Cars, organizing events for several hundred people at a time. However after one year of consistent 70+ hour workweeks, he needed a drastic career change. Therefore he enrolled into the Master program East Asian Economy and Society at the University of Vienna to learn more about his cultural roots. Stephan liked his studies so much that he graduated summa cum laude and applied right away for a research position that became available at the Department for East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna. He was lucky and got the job. Since 2011 Stephan has been working full time as a researcher and lecturer while pursuing his PhD. Stephan loves teaching and is passionate about his research that lies at the intersection of creativity and online education. His goal is to develop ways on how to uncover the full creative potential of humans through the meaningful use of educational technology.

“How to Master Any Language is a system that is absolutely perfect for busy individuals who can self-organize. There were incredibly pragmatic tips, functional and helpful tools, and the instructor was extremely well informed and enthusiastic. It was great to finally see a time-saving method that actually WORKS and is scientifically supported applied to several key aspects of language acquisition, and I would recommend this course to anyone interested in improving or developing their foreign language skills.”

„SUPER workshop!“

„Found the workshop a great motivation for learning a language with a totally self learning methodology.“

„Gabe is a really good speaker and knows what he is talking about. You can feel his enthusiasm about this topic and this makes the workshop very interesting.“

„It was a great workshop. Gabe not only knows exactly what he is talking about, but also how to communicate it. Every language teacher should be obliged to participate this workshop!“

“I was most impressed by Gabe Wyner’s enthusiasm for and practical approach to language learning, which he conveyed with energy and clarity. The exercise where we used mnemonics to assign gender to words was a brilliant practical demonstration of how a simple trick can make a big difference – I wish I had known about this technique when studying German! The workshop was well prepared, and Gabe was generous in sharing his own materials and providing us with very useful resources (e.g. first 625 word list, audio samples). I liked the “then and now” slide at the end – seeing all the information we had been given arranged into a series of steps made it seem manageable, and allowed us to chose where to focus first (depending on experience so far). The presentation was well put together and comprehensible, with good graphics and succinct explanations. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, with any questions and comments welcomed.”

About Gabe Wyner

Gabriel Wyner is an author, opera singer and polyglot based in Vienna, Austria. After reaching fluency in German in 14 weeks with the help of the immersive Middlebury Language Schools, he fell in love with the process of language learning, going on to spend two months in intensive Italian courses in Perugia, Italy. Searching for ways to bring the immersion experience into the home, he began to develop a system that rapidly builds fluency in short, daily sessions. In 2010, his efforts paid off. He learned French to fluency in 5 months, and then Russian in 9 months.

Born in Los Angeles, Gabriel graduated summa cum laude in 2007 from the University of Southern California with dual degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Vocal Arts Performance, and was awarded the Renaissance Scholar’s prize for excellence in unrelated disciplines. He then moved to Vienna to pursue triple Master’s degrees at the Konservatorium Wien in Opera, Lieder and Voice, and graduated with honors in 2011.
Currently learning Hungarian, Gabe is looking forward to Japanese next year. His book on language learning for Crown Archetype (Random House) is slated for release in 2014. His blog, TowerofBabelfish.com, details his methods and provides resources for learners of all languages.

I have just had a meeting with the representative for disabled persons Ms. Birigit Virtbauer at the University of Vienna. I learnt two BIG lessons:

Lesson Nr. 1

The relatively small group of students with special needs is NOT a homogenetic group. Consequently there is no “one fits all solution”.

Lesson Nr. 2

the teaching staff is already swamped with a lot of work and as a consequence all proposals that involve additional work - no matter what cause it is for – is hard to implement. THE QUESTION is: how can we design a PAINLESS work flow that makes higher education more accessible for students with special needs.

3 Steps to make your lectures fully accessible for hearing and visually impaired students

I propose 3 simple steps that take less than 10 minutes of additional work for the lecturer and ensures that each of his/her lectures not only get a ton of exposure BUT also becomes accessible for both, hearing impaired and visually impaired people as well.

Record your lessons while you are lecturing by using a screencasting software. A screencasting software allows you to record everything what is happening on the screen. It even records your computer audio AND your audio as well. Let’s assume you are using power point, the screencasting software records your power point presentation and speaking simultaneously. You just have to press a button to start the recording and press the very same button to end it. After that you click another button to export the recording to a video. That’s it.

Assign a student to transcribe the recorded lecture. I know what you might think now: “Why should any student do this tiring transcription work voluntarily?”. I believe that you will have no problems in finding a new student for transcribing each of your lectures IF you explain WHY you are doing this in the first place.

This is where the magic happens: create a youtube account (5 minutes), upload the recorded lecture (2 minutes) and upload the transcription as a plain text file (1 minute). As soon as you have uploaded the video and transcription to youtube, the captions automatically get synchronized with the video – AWESOME!

Please engage in the conversation and share your ideas in the comment section on how we could make higher education more accessible for disabled students.

All of us have this capability but it seems that most people either do not use it or us it for the wrong reasons. I am talking about the power of words and the impact they have on others. In this short 03:25 minutes long UNCON TV episode I am sharing with you how a simple facebook post about me that was written by one of my former students totally made my day and inspired me to make this UNCON TV episode.

More specifically you will learn:

Why words are so powerful.

What each of us can do in making other people more happy.

Why the way of saying things is more important than the actual content of our words.
